Blue Cups - Tea and Sympathy?

This week's theme for the 52 week illustration challenge is BLUE. So I dreamt up some little teacups and created them with watercolour...

I started to wonder if this is what I'd need for a little tea and sympathy? A nice cup of tea in shades of blue... And I began to realise that my current favourite shade of blue had shifted from Winsor Blue Green Shade (centre) to Winsor Blue Red Shade (right).... I wonder what yours is? :) I also began dreaming of the possibility of doing some editorial illustration someday - though perhaps using reference pictures instead of pulling shapes out of from the memory banks...

If the sky was orange...

If the sky was orange, the ground crimson rose, and clouds were shades of blue, green and purple, then I'm pretty sure this is how the village that sits within that landscape would look.... Another little sketchbook adventure combining pattern and line in my illustrations - another little celebration of Spring.

Spring is HERE!

My latest sketchbook adventure has been with an aim to combine the patterns and lines I love so much with illustration... Maybe in the future I might have the chance to use these shapes and patterns in my digital children's book illustrations too! :)

Shades of Blue vs. Shades of Red

Latest sketchbook experiments... :) I've been sick with the flu this week - but it's given me time to doodle and illustrate - just for fun!

Finished! New Artwork and a New Etsy Shop!

This digital painting, created in Photoshop, was started ages ago! Recently I've been sick in bed with a nasty flu - but the up-side was that it gave me time (in between naps) to complete this artwork.

The aim of the artwork was to experiment with colour and light - the cool light cast by the moon verse the warm light cast by the glowing flowers. And I think it worked well! :)

I've also now opened my Etsy shop - and this is available for sale as a print, so head on over and check it out: www.kathyapplebyart.etsy.com

Introducing Little Sower Samuel

Wahoo! Advance copies have arrived!

I had the absolute pleasure of illustrating "Little Sower Samuel" with first-time author, Robert Costa.

This is the first published work I have illustrated and I can tell you, it's such a thrill to see it printed and bound. I have to keep pinching myself and telling myself, "Yes! It is a real book!"

Advance copies are now available online and launch dates will be released soon - stay tuned!

Little Sower Samuel loves to garden. When he looks around and sees that his city does not have enough of the greenness he loves, Samuel embarks on a mission of sharing, by giving seedlings and joy to all around.

My First Book!

A week ago I moved into my new place in Port Macquarie. It's a gorgeous townhouse and I feel so blessed to be here!

But perhaps what I found even more exciting was when yesterday I purchased some bookshelves. I sold my bookshelves over a year ago when I first moved from Toowoomba. Since then, my books have existed in a pathetic pile on the floor. A depressing sight! But now I have these beautiful shelves - sometimes it's the small things you appreciate the most.

While organising and shelving my beloved books this morning, I was quite surprised to find a children's book that I wrote and illustrated for a school project in year 4! What a laugh! I don't think it's going to win any literary or illustrative awards, but here it is for a bit of fun.

Mr Gardners New Boat
Written and Illustrated by Katherine Appleby (Age 10)

Mr Gardners has bought a new boat, and has decided to try it out on the river.

Mr Gardner was just about to leave when Kate and Tim came running towards him and said,
"Please Mr Gardner, can we come on your boat?"
Mr Gardner said, "OK, as long as you don't rock the boat".
So Kate and Tim climbed aboard.

Mr Gardner was floating down the river when Cat came walking quietly up to the side of the river.
"Please Mr Gardner", she said with a meow, "May I come on your boat trip?"
"OK", said Mr Gardner, "As long as you don't meow all the time".
So cat jumped on.

Mr Gardner was floating under a bridge when Dog appeared.
"Excuse me," he said with a bark, "May I come on your boat please?"
"OK," said Mr Gardner, "As long as you don't chase Cat".
So dog leaped on.

Mr Gardner was floating past a farm when Pig appeared and said, "If it's OK with you Mr Gardner, may I come along on your boat?"
"OK", said Mr Gardner, "As long as you don't be mean to dog".

Mr Gardner was floating past a paddock when Cow came walking down to the bank.
"Excuse me Mr Gardner, can I come on your boat too?"
"OK", said Mr Gardner, "As long as you don't tread on Pig's tail".
So cow came aboard.

Mr Gardner was almost home when...

Cow stamped on Pig's tail,

Pig was mean and teased Dog,

Dog chased Cat and almost knocked everyone over and

Katie and Tim rocked the boat! And then...

The boat
          tipped
                  over!!!

KERSPLOSH!

So everyone swam back to the bank and went home to Mr Gardner's house for tea.

THE END.
